Move to Phase 0 Announcement
With the move to Phase 0 for at least the next two weeks, it is beyond critical that you are checking the class website’s (chsclinch.weebly.com) daily plans each day and watching the videos posted for each lesson. I can see how many people watch each video and roughly it is 50% or less of what it should be.
It is going to be nearly impossible to be successful in this course if you are not in tune with the instruction I'm providing. I can tell pretty quickly in a conversation with a student whether or not they have seen the video for a topic, and it's difficult to help you if you haven't done the bare minimum.
I am working diligently to make the videos as concise as possible, and to make the homework as brief as possible so that your total time commitment to this class is what you need to be successful without wasting your time.
Between designing the lesson, making the note packet, recording the lesson, posting the video to the class website, and then typing the description, each lesson takes me roughly 5-6 hours. Like everything in life, you won’t get better without practice, so please don’t waste my time by reaching out before you’ve done your part first.
I will do whatever I can to help you succeed, but that starts with you doing your part. The following is what I expect you to do EVERY DAY:
We will get through this together, and I know that you can be successful. Lately not everyone has been doing their part, and that makes it very difficult to be successful. Now that we won’t even see each other in person weekly, it’s more crucial than ever that you are completing each step above every day, otherwise you are digging a hole and setting yourself up for failure
As always, if you have any questions for me, please ask!
-Mr. Clinch

Tuesday (1/5) - Thursday(1/7): The Man Who Knew Infinity
I was just informed this morning that our class is not required to do the mid-year iReady assessment (we will still have to do the end of year one in the spring). So, I am adjusting our plans.
Tuesday 1/5
Your responses should be at least 4 sentences for each question, especially the last one.
Tuesday 1/5
- We are going to watch a movie titled "The Man Who Knew Infinity" which is a 2015 film about Srinivasa Ramanujan, an Indian mathematician who was quite possibly one of the brightest and most influential mathematicians who ever lived.
- It's a high-quality Hollywood movie about a mathematician, not a "math movie", so quit rolling your eyes!
- As you watch, be prepared by the end of the movie to answer the questions posted under Thursday's plans.
- Use this link to watch at least 37 minutes of the movie today. You can stop at 37:24 after he cries in the room with the statues. LINK: The Man Who Knew Infinity: Part 1
- We are continuing The Man Who Knew Infinity today, so use the link below to pick up where we left off yesterday and watch until 1:11:50, after he coughs into his kerchief and is reading at his desk
- LINK: The Man Who Knew Infinity: Part 2
- Use the link below to pick up where we left off yesterday and watch until the end.
- LINK: The Man Who Knew Infinity: Part 3
- After watching the film, answer the questions below and turn your responses in (either a picture of your handwritten response or uploading a Word doc) on Teams.
Your responses should be at least 4 sentences for each question, especially the last one.
- What do you think went through Ramanujan’s mind when he received the invitation from Professor G.H. Hardy? Why did he decide to go?
- Why do you think Ramanujan was so eager to get his theories published? What proved to be his biggest obstacle and why?
- Explain how Ramanujan’s background can be inspirational to inspiring mathematicians.
- Imagine you are Ramanujan and you have just arrived at Cambridge University. Upon arrival, you are faced with various forms of racial discrimination and find it difficult to adjust to life in England. Write a journal/diary entry (be appropriate) expressing your thoughts and feelings of your experiences so far.
Friday, January 8: 9.2 Day 2 Graph x2+bx+c by Factoring
- Fill in the notes for the lesson (and then turn them in to TEAMS) as you watch the following video (click link): 9.2 Day 2 Graph x2+bx+c by Factoring
- Complete the worksheet attached below (handed out in class) and turn in to TEAMS by 3 PM Monday.
- We will have our 8.6-9.3a quiz on Monday, so study for it!

Tuesday, January 12: Begin Filling in Semester Review Sheet
Today we will begin our process of reviewing for the semester test. We will spend Tuesday-Friday this week preparing for our semester test. Before discussing the plan for review, here is how the semester test will work for our class:
The semester test will be posted on Teams on Tuesday morning of semester test week (January 19). The test will remain open until 3 PM Thursday (January 21). A day students will have a day in class Tuesday to work on the test and B day students will have a day in class Wednesday to work on the test. However, you are free to work on the test any time between when it opens and when it closes; you don't necessarily have to finish it in class if you have in class days. Rather, I'm just giving you time to work on it. Remote students have between Tuesday morning and Thursday at 3 PM to finish it.
You are allowed a calculator, pencil, paper, and your review sheet (discussed below), but nothing nor no one else. Tests turned in late between 3 PM Thursday and 3 PM Friday of semester test week will earn a maximum of 50%. Tests turned in after 3 PM of semester test week (January 22) will not be scored (earn a 0%).
Now, below I have posted a document I call a learning target review sheet where I have listed all the skills/sections that could be addressed on the semester test. Your task is to take today and tomorrow to fill in each section with an example problem or notes. What you list on this sheet you are allowed to use on the semester test. I would use old note packets, HW, the book, and prior quizzes to find examples to put down. I have also posted a partially filled in version below the blank copy so you can see some examples.
